  • Author Talk: Epistolary Fiction

Join novelists Lynne Golodner and Carol Van Den Hende for a deep-dive into using letter-writing and lost letters as a structure and focus for fiction! Whether it’s Lynne’s Scotland novel, Cave of Secrets, where buried letters discovered in a Highland cave unearth secrets from aristocratic ancestors, or Dear Orchid, Carol’s latest book written entirely in epistolary format, we’ll discuss how letters in a novel can create a deeper relationship with readers. We’ll explore second person POV–YOU–that lessens the distance between author and reader and creates more intimacy. We’ll also share our author lives, where we find inspiration for novels, the challenges we face (and overcome!) to write good books and even dip into the neuroscience of the connection between reader and writer, which is the closest thing to a brain-to-brain connection two people can have! Participants will not only have a chance to win a free book, but they’ll come away from this conversation with renewed interest in reaching out to someone they haven’t been in touch with in a while, perhaps even through a letter, to say something you’ve left unsaid or reconnect at the soul level.
